That’s right. Azalea, Unschooled has hit the mean streets of Portland, Maine. Except, it was South Portland, and it wasn’t so much the streets as the mall. Still. It was a lot of fun signing books at the Islandport Press kiosk at the Maine Mall this past weekend with Cooper and Packrat author Tamra Wight. (By the way, she has a third book about them coming out this spring!) We had a great time meeting people and talking about our books. During lulls, she and I discussed weighty issues pertaining to the writing life, such as whether or not one should venture out to stores on Black...

I’ll be at the Maine Mall in South Portland, Maine on Saturday, November 21 signing copies of Azalea, Unschooled at the Islandport Press kiosk near Macy’s. Also signing will be children’s book author Tamra Wight, who wrote the terrific Cooper and Packrat books. If you’re out shopping, stop by!

Thanks to everyone at the Portsmouth/Newington Barnes & Noble for making Saturday’s signing such a success. What a great store–and if you haven’t been to the city of Portsmouth, NH, put it on your list! It’s a beautiful town. I loved meeting all of the kids, parents, grandparents, educators, and unschoolers who stopped by my table. The two most frequently asked questions at the signing were: Q. What ages is the book for? A. Officially, 8-12, but it’s suitable for younger, precocious readers and for curious adults. Q. Is this book for boys, too? A. Yes! All...

I had a great time at Books in Boothbay. Thirty or so Maine children’s book writers and illustrators gathered in the historic Town Hall building at Boothbay Railway Village. I had the good fortune to share a table with Jane Parker, who was introducing people to her beautiful book Lily of the North. Before the public came in to browse, I got to walk around and meet a lot of people, including fellow Islandport Press writers Lynn Plourde, Mark Scott Ricketts, Brenda Reeves Sturgis, and Lea Wait. As the event got underway, many people stopped to talk about Azalea, Unschooled. Meanwhile,...

For some reason, this cover didn’t make the cut. Some events coming up: I’ll be at the Prince Memorial Library in Cumberland, Maine from 4-5 pm on Thursday, July 9, talking about Azalea, Unschooled with the fourth and fifth grade reading group. I’m looking forward to it–please stop by if you’re in the area! (Check out some great old pictures of the library from the Maine Historical Society’s Memory Network.) Then on Saturday, July 11 I’ll be at Books in Boothbay signing from 9-12. It’s going to be a terrific event with lots of Maine authors...
